Philip Foglietta worked as a coach and Physical Education Teacher at Poly Prep from 1966 to 1991. He died in 1998, without being held accountable in a single criminal or civil forum for his numerous, prolonged and heinous crimes against children.

In 1972, John Marino, a Poly Prep student (and now Foundation Board Member), made two specific complaints to Poly Prep administrators with his parents present. This complaint included sexual overtures made against Marino, as well as repeated sexual assaults of young boys at or near Poly’s grounds, as witnessed by Marino.

In 1991, Poly Alum (and now Foundation Board Member) David Hiltbrand contacted Headmaster Williams and informed him that in the late 1960’s, along with several other classmates, he had been repeatedly sexually abused by Foglietta. (An account of this can be found in an article written by David in our In The News section). Foglietta was still employed at Poly at the time.

Phil Foglietta retired from Poly Prep in 1991. Upon his retirement, Poly Prep feted Foglietta with a “retirement” gala at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City.

In 2002, Poly Alum John Joseph Paggioli informed Poly Prep Headmaster David Harman of prolonged sexual abuse he had suffered at the hands of Coach Foglietta from 1971 to 1974.

On October 21, 2002 Poly’s current Headmaster, David Harman, issued a letter to Poly alumni (Click here) which confirmed that there were “credible allegations” of sexual abuse committed by a now deceased former employee of Poly Prep.

It is our understanding that other victims came forward to Harman after this letter was issued.

John Joseph Paggioli filed a Civil Suit against Poly Prep, Harman, and past Administrators and Coaches alleging that the school was indeed aware of the problem as far back as Foglietta’s first years of employ up to his “Retirement” in 1991, 26 years after his arrival. This lawsuit was dismissed in January 2006, not on the merits, but rather on the basis that the statute of limitations had expired.

A fuller account of that Lawsuit and Decision can be found in our In The News section.
